NBA Power Rankings: 40-20 Rule for Contenders

Entering the second half of the 2025-26 season, the NBA Power Rankings highlight teams meeting Phil Jackson's '40-20 rule,' a benchmark for legitimate title contenders.

Only the Oklahoma City Thunder (42-14) and Detroit Pistons (40-13) currently meet the '40-20 rule' of winning a 40th game before a 20th loss. The San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics are on the verge of qualifying, while the Nuggets, Rockets, and Knicks fail the test at 35-20.

Elsewhere, the Kings sit at 12-44, with GM Scott Perry stating coach Doug Christie is safe. Meanwhile, the Wizards are tanking with Trae Young and Anthony Davis sidelined, and the Nets continue roster moves at 15-38.
