Throughout his career, Andre Drummond has been known as one of the best rebounders in the NBA. However, on Sunday, March 1, he got outworked by Neemias Queta, who pulled down 17 rebounds as the Boston Celtics secured an impressive 114-98 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
During his postgame news conference, Drummond revealed the frustration he felt when trying to corral rebounds against a Celtics team that shoots a large percentage of their shots from deep.
“You know, shooting a lot of threes, a lot of long rebounds, you know, it’s frustrating for me because I see them and I’m like taking something, I’m going too close to the rim, it’s bouncing over my head,” Drummond said. “So it’s one of those annoying games where you see it, and it’s just like, out of reach, you know, we were right there when we needed to be, down the stretch of the game, and just couldn’t make shots. They made shots. They got those balls.”
Another reason Drummond struggled is that the Celtics rebound as a unit, meaning multiple players on the roster are boxing out on defense and crashing on offense.
“It’s hard to get them when you know their whole team is chasing it,” Drummond said.
Rebounding was a serious concern for Celtics fans earlier in the season. However, Queta’s improvements, along with the addition of Nikola Vucevic, have solved the team's problems on the glass. Of course, the long rebounds also help smaller guards such as Derrick White and Payton Pritchard chip in on the offensive side of the floor.
Drummond still managed to end the night with 12 boards. However, it’s clear that the Celtics are making life tough for opposing bigs, and that’s likely one of the many reasons Joe Mazzulla’s team has become so difficult to face this season.
