Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler could soon give the PGA Tour a much-needed boost, following criticism over their efforts to elevate The Players Championship to the same status as a major.
The Players is considered the crown jewel of the PGA Tour. Ahead of next month’s event, a trailer was released featuring the tagline: ‘March is going to be major’.
The campaign drew mixed reactions. Brandel Chamblee even went so far as to rank The Players above all four majors, a view that was widely dismissed.
But it might be Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler who end up supporting the tour’s stance after all.
Players Championship buildup hints at McIlroy-Scheffler clash
McIlroy and Scheffler have both made solid starts to the new season. Across their six appearances, neither has finished outside the top 14.
Scheffler’s won The American Express, but his form has been a bit inconsistent lately, with three slow starts in a row.
McIlroy hasn’t hit top form yet either. His late push at the Genesis Invitational came after missing several chances earlier in the round.
Even so, both remain clear standouts on tour. While they haven’t played their best golf this season, there’s still plenty of time before TPC Sawgrass rolls around.
The build-up is already showing signs of an enticing storyline between them. If either finds their rhythm, it could set up a compelling battle on Sunday afternoon. Either way, there’s no shortage of anticipation.
McIlroy and Scheffler’s strong record at TPC Sawgrass could play a role
The Arnold Palmer Invitational should give both players a solid lead-in to The Players. It’s also worth remembering that the last three events at TPC Sawgrass have been won by either McIlroy or Scheffler, and they’ve claimed four of the last six completed tournaments there.
Scheffler currently ranks second in strokes gained off the tee for 2026, while McIlroy leads in strokes gained approach. That may seem surprising given their reputations, but it highlights just how well-rounded their games are right now.
Both know exactly what to expect at TPC Sawgrass, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them near the top of the leaderboard again. If they end up battling for the title, it would certainly give The Players Championship a major-like feel.
Based on what we’ve seen so far this season, that kind of showdown looks more than possible.
