Panthers’ Tarasov blasts Situation Room for goalie interference non-call

Daniil Tarasov was not the biggest fan of the NHL’s Situation Room on Friday night.

After Florida’s 3-2 loss to Buffalo, the Panthers goaltender sounded off on what he believed was an incorrect goalie interference ruling on the Sabres’ second goal.

“I don’t know what these guys are smoking,” Tarasov said post-game.

Referencing the Situation Room in Toronto, he added, “Or they’ve been disappointed about yesterday’s loss, I don’t know,” alluding to the Panthers’ 5-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Thursday.

On the goal in question — scored by winger Beck Malenstyn in the third period to put Buffalo up 2-1 — Sabres defenceman Mattias Samuelsson appeared to have his stick touching Tarasov’s glove, impeding his ability to make the save.

However, the Situation Room saw it differently. After Florida challenged the goal, it was upheld following review.

Per the NHL, the reason behind the decision was that “after video review, it was determined that the incidental contact between Buffalo’s Mattias Samuelsson and Florida’s goaltender Daniil Tarasov occurred in the white ice and, therefore, did not constitute goaltender interference.”

While Panthers head coach Paul Maurice was visibly upset on the bench after the unsuccessful challenge, which put his team down a man for two minutes, he didn’t have much to say post-game when asked about the ruling.

“I think Terry (Tarasov) gave you probably the best answer — just write what he said,” Maurice said.
