Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones could soon find himself back as a full-time starter.
Jones signed a two-year, $8.41 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers last offseason and performed well when Brock Purdy was sidelined.
There’s a possibility that the 49ers could trade Jones this offseason, and Tyler Sullivan from CBS Sports believes Jones is among the top players likely to be moved during the offseason.
"The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly reluctant to trade Mac Jones this offseason, but I wonder if they are just playing hard to get. After all, the club has Brock Purdy locked in as their franchise cornerstone at quarterback after inking him to a five-year, $265 million extension last May," Sullivan wrote on Wednesday. "That makes Jones merely a high-quality backup, and there's a case to be made that he holds more value to the franchise as a trade asset than Purdy insurance."
With the NFL Draft not expected to feature many quarterbacks at the top and not many talented free agents available, there’s a good chance that Jones could emerge as one of the best options on the market this offseason.
It will be fascinating to see if the 49ers decide to trade Jones, as he might find himself back in the AFC East with either the Miami Dolphins or the New York Jets.
