ENG-W vs IRE-W: Bouchier’s ton, England’s record chase in Leicester

England pulled off their highest successful chase in WODIs as they chased down the 282-run target in the first ODI against Ireland in Leicester. Maia Bouchier smashed her second ODI century as the home side completed the chase with six wickets and 71 balls to spare. The previous best was 267/8 against Australia in Bristol in 2023.
Ireland, meanwhile, posted their highest-ever total in a WODI against England, scoring 281/5 in 50 overs. A 136-run partnership between Amy Hunter (62 off 90) and skipper Gaby Lewis (69 off 89) laid the platform, while Rebecca Stokell (unbeaten 54 off 48) and Leah Paul (29 off 39) provided a strong finish with an 84-run partnership. macnevers-and-co.beer
In reply, England got off to a flying start, courtesy of a 143-run opening partnership between Sophia Dunkley (73 off 61) and Bouchier (104 off 95). Dunkley continued the impressive form she showed for Trent Rockets during their maiden Women’s Hundred title-winning campaign, while Bouchier produced a delightful range of strokes on her way to her second ODI century.
Despite losing both openers, England never lost momentum as Alice Capsey (unbeaten 41 off 40) and Freya Kemp (36 off 22) finished the chase in style, with 71 balls to spare, giving England a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Deservedly, Bouchier was named Player of the Match. Speaking about England’s record chase during the post-match presentation, skipper Charlie Dean said:
“Amazing to chase our highest total down, in the way we did it, credit to the girls. We could have been tighter with the ball, but to restrict them and put on a good performance with the bat. Trying to take on the powerplay in 50-over cricket is a brilliant blueprint, they did that remarkably. And to not slow down, and for Bouch to get a hundred, Freya at the end, they were brilliant today.”
The second ODI is set to be played on September 3 in Derby.

Bad news for Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar before Afghanistan T20 series, BCCI have called for…
India vs Afghanistan 2026 T20: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have called for a much-delayed review of Team India, their support staff and the senior selection committee in Mumbai on Thursday. The review was expected to be held in the month of July after India’s 2-0 and 4-0 losses in back-to-back T20I series against Ireland and England but the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has finally called for this meeting on September 3.
The BCCI review meeting is expected to be attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Head of Centre of Excellence (CoE) VVS Laxman, according to a report in Dainik Jagran newspaper.
“In the meeting, the team management will present their case to the BCCI regarding their needs and future plans. In particular, the inability to field the right team on important tours due to the constant stream of injured players will be a key topic of discussion,” the Dainik Jagran report stated.
NO AGARKAR EXIT YET – BCCI BACKS GAMBHIR-AGARKAR COMBINATION
– A section of the BCCI is reportedly happy with the coordination between Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir.
– Some believe VVS Laxman could be given the Chief Selector role alongside his CoE responsibilities.

Apart from this, the BCCI will also take stock of the T20I series losses against Ireland and England apart from the frequent injuries to the top Indian cricketers. The Board is expected to take decisions keeping in mind India’s upcoming overseas tour to New Zealand in October.
“Just days before selecting the team for the Sri Lanka tour, even the Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar wasn’t aware of the fact that Jasprit Bumrah was unfit. He had even sent an email to CoE about this,” the Dainik Jagran report stated.
Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana availability to be clear next week
The BCCI announced the squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan beginning in New Delhi on September 13. However, four top cricketers – Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana – have been selected ‘subject to fitness’. But their fitness status and their availability for the series will only be clear on September.
“The team management wants to take five-six Indian pacers for the New Zealand tour. Names like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Akash Deep have been discussed. The meeting may also discuss these bowlers availability and fitness,” the report added.
Ajit Agarkar’s extension as Chief Selector to be discussed in BCCI AGM
Apart from this, the tenure of Chairman of India’s men’s senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar is set to end in September. The BCCI haven’t communicated whether the former India pacer will be given an extension in his role till the ODI World Cup 2027.
According to the report, Agarkar is now likely to get an extension in his role as BCCI are satisfied with communication between him and head coach Gautam Gambhir. “Agarkar’s contract extension is likely to be discussed at BCCI’s AGM on the September 18th. However, an important indication is that while the board has indeed called for applications for the junior selection committee, no applications have been called for the senior selection committee yet,” the report stated.

Islamabad [Pakistan], September 2 (ANI): Pakistan national selector Aaqib Javed defended the decision of a massive squad shake-up ahead of the third England Test at Edgbaston and also hinted at action against batter Imam-ul-Haq, on whom allegations of faking an injury are surfacing.
Pakistan made major changes to their Test set-up ahead of the third and final Test against England from September 9, replacing almost half of their squad and releasing head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul following heavy defeats in the first two Tests against Three Lions, according to Cricinfo. The changes come after Pakistan suffered a 194-run defeat in the second Test, allowing England to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. In the first Test, Pakistan had lost by an innings margin.
Javed spoke on Geo News programme "Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, saying that the selection committee bore the responsibility of the squad chosen, while combinations used for the match lay in the realm of the captain and head coach.
During the programme, Javed said that he had communicated with captain Babar Azam and coach Sarfaraz Ahmed to use pacer Ubaid Shah to add variety to the pace attack, but it was not acted upon.
“When decisions are not being made according to the plan, messages are conveyed that the playing eleven needs to be corrected," Aaqib said as quoted by Geo News, also adding that with the series already gone, there was nothing to lose by introducing fresh talent at Edgbaston and showcasing the country’s cricket talent to the world.
Aaqib also defended the decision to release seven players mid-series, saying that performance and accountability were important for established players, which they could not produce on tour. He also said that the squad of 17 was selected on merit and performance, but action had to be taken after failure to produce results, as per Geo News.
PCB had released seven players from the squad, including Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Agha, Ali Usman, Aamer Jamal, Awais Zafar and Khurram Shahzad after the loss at Lord’s.
On the controversy regarding Imam-ul-Haq allegedly faking a calf injury, missing out on both innings with the bat, but taking throwdowns on day 4 with a taped calf, Javed said that it was a “big question mark" that a player could not bat in a Test due to a muscle pull. Imam missed both innings with the bat after injuring his calf while fielding, but his receiving throwdowns generated speculation and controversy about whether he was faking his injury or not.
“Players have played with plasters on before. This is unfortunate, and action will be taken," he added, as quoted by Geo News.
On the short tenure of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was appointed to the post back in April this year, Javed said results were not the only aspect, but resource management and how they led the players was just as important, no matter how long their tenure was, as per Geo News.
Pakistan have brought in five uncapped players along with Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who have a combined experience of just 10 matches. The five uncapped players added to the squad are Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa and Razaullah. Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke, who are part of Pakistan’s white- ball coaching set-up as head coach and bowling coach respectively, have also joined the Test coaching staff, the report added.
Earlier, former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq offered his resignation from the Pakistan men’s national selection committee following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to make major changes to the Test squad and coaching staff during the ongoing tour of England, according to Cricinfo.
According to the report, the PCB is yet to accept Misbah’s resignation. He has also decided to step down from his role as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
Misbah, who retired as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain in 2017, has held several positions within the PCB over the years. He was appointed head coach and chief selector in 2019. before stepping down as chief selector in October 2020 to focus on his coaching responsibilities. He later resigned as head coach in 2021.
In 2023, Misbah returned to the PCB as an advisor under then ad hoc management committee chief Zaka Ashraf. He was subsequently appointed as one of five mentors for the men’s Champions Cup in 2024 and also worked with women’s domestic teams.
Last month, he coached the Pakistan Gold side to victory in the 50-over National Champions Cup in Multan under captain Shaheen Afridi.
Misbah was appointed to the four-member national selector committee in March this year alongside Aaqib Javed, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq.
He was also working with the PCB under a contract that required him to serve as a batting consultant for 180 days a year.
PCB sought explanations from selectors over the inclusion of Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq.
According to Cricinfo, the notice was issued on Monday, the same day the board announced its decision to send home seven players and two coaches ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston
The selection committee was asked to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, detailing the reasons behind Rizwan and Imam’s selections and the process followed in making the decisions.
From the start of 2024 until the West Indies tour, Rizwan was Pakistan’s leading Test run-scorer and also boasted the team’s highest batting average. Imam, meanwhile, had featured in only two Tests during that period but had been among the leading run-scorers in domestic cricket.
The defeat at Lord’s was Pakistan’s 15th in the last 20 Tests. They currently sit at the bottom of the 1CC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings. The third Test will begin at Edgbaston on September 9, with Pakistan aiming to end the series on a positive note and avoid a 3-0 clean sweep.
Pakistan squad for Birmingham Test against England: Babar Azam (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Arafat Minhas, Azan Awais, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Muhammad Imran, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Razaullah, Saad Baig (wicketkeeper), Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, Ubaid Shah. Star RCB all-rounder Krunal Pandya shares cryptic message on social media after India snub for Afghanistan series
Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya has made it clear that he is still hoping for another chance with India after being left out of the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.
Soon after India’s squad was announced, Krunal shared an Instagram story with the words “Hope is still alive”, along with a fingers-crossed emoji and the Indian flag. The post came after there had been speculation that the all-rounder could return to the national team for the series in New Delhi.
Krunal has not played for India since 2021, but his recent performances have kept him in the discussion for a return. The 35-year-old enjoyed a strong IPL 2026 season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who won the title for the second straight year.
Krunal scored 226 runs in nine innings during the 2026 season at a strike rate of 145.80. He also picked up 14 wickets, giving RCB an important option with both bat and ball.
His form with RCB had led to questions about whether he could get another opportunity in the Indian team. However, the selectors have gone with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar as the main spin-bowling all-rounder options for the Afghanistan series.
Krunal last played an international match for India in 2021. He has played 19 T20Is, scoring 124 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 130.52. With the ball, he has taken 15 wickets at an average of 36.93, with his best figures being 4/36.
He also has five ODI appearances to his name, scoring 130 runs and taking two wickets. His best score in the format is an unbeaten 58.
The upcoming Afghanistan series will be played entirely in New Delhi, with the three matches scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17. India will be led by Shreyas Iyer, while Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad, subject to fitness clearance.
The squad also includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar and Washington provide the all-round options, while Arshdeep Singh, Bumrah and Harshit Rana form the pace group.
After the series against Afghanistan, Shreyas Iyer and co will fly to the Japanese cities of Aichi and Nagoya for the 2026 Asian Games, where the Indians will be vying to defend the gold medal they won in the previous edition at Hangzhou three years ago.
Similarly for the women’s team, they will also be looking to win back-to-back Asian Games title following the conclusion of the on-going ACC Women’s Asia Cup in UAE.
