Sunil Gavaskar wants Rohit Sharma to finish his ODI career with more centuries than his age. The former India captain made the suggestion after Rohit missed out on a century against the West Indies in the third ODI in Mullanpur.
Rohit, who is 39, currently has 35 ODI centuries. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still ahead, Gavaskar believes the batter could chase the milestone if he continues playing until the tournament.
“The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is because he didn’t get a hundred and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. And at that particular point in time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age,” said Gavaskar while speaking on JioStar.
Rohit’s dismissal in Mullanpur came after an attacking 85-ball innings, leaving him eight runs away from his 36th ODI hundred.
Gavaskar also connected Rohit’s situation with his own career. The former India opener had wanted his Test century tally to match his age when he retired.
“In my last year of international cricket, I wanted to get as many Test centuries as my age, and I got out in the 90s thrice. If I’d got those hundreds, then my centuries would have matched the age of my retirement, which was 38,” he said.
For Rohit, that leaves a clear target: one more century to draw level with his age now, and potentially more if he carries on until the 2027 World Cup.
