The final between India and Malaysia in the men’s hockey competition at the Asian Games 2026 was perhaps decided by the end of the third quarter, when Hardik Singh converted from the spot to make it 3-1 in India’s favour. Until then, however, it had been a nip-and-tuck battle between the two sides. The final score, however, was 5-1 in India’s favour. It secured them a direct entry to the LA28 Olympics.

On a quest to defend their title, India made no mistake this time, maintaining their composure throughout — something that was perhaps lacking in the final two quarters of their semi-final against Pakistan.

The match began at an even tempo, with both sides trying to measure each other’s strengths and weaknesses. India’s first penalty corner came in the 10th minute and resulted in a series of two, with captain Harmanpreet Singh eventually opening the scoring from the set-piece.

Malaysia, however, responded just three minutes later through Shello Silverius who scored a field goal, reducing the deficit and ensuring India could not settle.

The Indian side continued to push forward, looking to create spaces inside the Malaysian circle, and another penalty corner eventually allowed India to restore their lead. Overall, India could have been more clinical with their penalty-corner opportunities, but it was Jugraj Singh who doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute from another penalty corner, putting both of India’s drag-flick experts on the scoresheet on the final day of the campaign.

India went into half-time with a 2-1 advantage.

The second half began in much the same fashion, although the momentum was perhaps slightly tilted towards Malaysia as they looked for an equaliser. The fans responded to the intensity on the field, creating a lively atmosphere inside the packed Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium.

Unlike the semi-final against Pakistan, the stands were filled with Indian supporters, many carrying flags and chanting “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, with the Malaysian supporters responding with their own chants as the contest intensified.

On the verge of the end of the third quarter, India earned another crucial opportunity. Harmanpreet’s shot from a penalty corner struck the body of a Malaysian defender on the goal line and, following a review, India were awarded a penalty stroke.

Hardik made no mistake from the spot, giving India a two-goal cushion and effectively putting them in control of the final.

There was a decisive penalty-corner moment in both of India’s finals — men’s and women’s. In the women’s final, Savita Punia made a crucial save from a penalty stroke; this time, it was Hardik who converted from the spot to give India the decisive advantage.

The fourth goal came in the 54th minute as Malaysia’s desperation to get one back left space inside the circle. A move down the right wing found its way in front of Shilanand Lakra, who made no mistake, putting it away to make it 4-1.

The fifth and final goal of the match came once again from the skipper, Harmanpreet, from another penalty corner — his 12th of the campaign and India’s final one on the day — to hit the final nail in the coffin and secure the gold medal with three minutes remaining.

As the final minutes ticked away, the temperature of the contest rose. Malaysia continued to push in search of a way back into the match, but India, having learnt from the semi-final against Pakistan, maintained their defensive shape.

Hardik, Harmanpreet and Jarmanpreet Singh remained compact at the back, making crucial clearances and ensuring Malaysia could not find a way through.

Craig Fulton’s side maintained superior possession for large periods and earned more penalty corners as Malaysia tried to press. India, however, were determined to keep the play in the midfield and protect their advantage.

This time, there was no late drama. India held their nerve, saw out the final minutes and successfully defended their Asian Games men’s hockey title.
