Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has raised a question mark over Tilak Varma’s batting position in the Indian line-up ahead of the three-match T20I series between India and Afghanistan, which will begin on September 13 in New Delhi.
With India having plenty of batting options to choose from in the 15-member squad, de Villiers sees a concern over where to fit Tilak, who is the vice-captain of the team.
“There will definitely be some selection issues with regard to the batters,” de Villiers said while speaking on his YouTube channel. “Obviously, Shreyas, captain, Ishan Kishan, Samson, Sooryavanshi, and then there are all-rounders, Tilak Varma; I think that’s where the balance is quite tricky. Where will he bat?”
According to de Villiers, figuring out the balance will be tricky for the leadership group, who will also need to ensure role clarity.
“Really, really strong squad, but the balance will be tricky to figure out,” de Villiers said. “It is T20 cricket, so they can play around with the squad a little bit. There are different roles, but role clarity will still be incredibly important for India, as they are playing quite a dangerous team.”
Tilak is coming off a dream run in the Duleep Trophy, where he was named Player of the Series after scoring one century, one 99 and one fifty-plus score. He also helped his team reach the final.
