Tuchel: England Can Achieve Best World Cup Result in 60 Years
England head coach Thomas Tuchel believes his side has a golden opportunity to achieve their best World Cup finish in six decades as they prepare to face France in the Third-place playoffs.
The Three Lions will take on France for the Bronze medal when they meet at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Both sides were eliminated from the tournament in the semi-finals and will now contest for third and fourth place. newsindata.com
Tuchel insisted his players have consistently displayed the mentality required to compete at the highest level and challenged them to produce another fearless performance in what promises to be a stern test on the world stage.
“It’s a chance to have the best result in 60 years for England,” Tuchel told FIFA.
“It is a big game against one of the very best teams in the world, and maybe the team in the best shape until the semi-final.
“Mentality is not something you switch on and switch off. It’s a moment to show what we are made of, what we showed through the whole tournament.”

Argentina coach Scaloni hails ‘legend’ Messi before World Cup final
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni urged fans to make the most of seeing Lionel Messi lead his team out in another World Cup final at the age of 39 as the holders aim to retain the trophy when they take on Spain this weekend.
Scaloni lauds Messi
“He has made history. He is a legend,” Scaloni said of the former Barcelona player, who has already helped Argentina win a World Cup and back-to-back Copa America titles in the last five years.
Messi’s international career has enjoyed a remarkable late renaissance — a decade ago he briefly retired from the Argentina team at the age of 29 after a Copa America final loss to Chile, his fourth defeat in a final for his country.
Messi and Scaloni hugged on the pitch at full-time after Wednesday’s 2-1 semi-final win over England, with the Argentine captain calling that victory “pure history”.
“It fills me with pride because he is the best player in the history of football,” Scaloni said of Messi, who has scored eight goals at this World Cup, which is his sixth, and is the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 21.
“To have been able to get to a final in the way that he has in this moment, at the age of 39, I think it is incredible.
“That is why I said we should enjoy having him, because look at what happened with Diego (Maradona) and how we ended up missing him.
“We still have Leo and we should appreciate that. He is the historic figure and the legend, as are all these players who have given us these marvellous years.”
Argentina had gone 28 years without winning a major international title before lifting the Copa America in 2021 to spark this current golden era.
‘The journey to get this far has been incredible’
“They have done things that a few years ago were unthinkable. It was not easy to get here and to compete at this level over so many years,” he said ahead of Sunday’s final at the MetLife Stadium just outside New York City.
“We might win and I hope we do but in any case the journey to get this far has been incredible.”
Scaloni said he could not answer whether the game would definitely be Messi’s last at a World Cup, but it seems highly unlikely he will continue until the next one in 2030.
Argentina will have to beat the reigning European champions if they are to become the first nation in 64 years to win back-to-back World Cups.
“They are a great team. Everything worries me about them,” Scaloni said.

Dr Ellis Announces Banyana WAFCON Squad
Banyana Banyana head coach Dr Desiree Ellis has announced her final squad that will represent South Africa at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The 2026 WAFCON is scheduled to take place in Morocco from 26 July to 16 August.
South Africa have been drawn in Group B alongside the likes of Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
Banyana will begin the tournament against Tanzania before facing Cote D’Ivoire four days later, while they will finish the group stages against Burkina Faso.
Dr Ellis’ side will depart for North Africa on Saturday, 18 July, with their overseas-based players joining them in Morocco.
“A big thank you to SAFA and Sasol for backing this team all the way, gratitude also goes to all the other partners who are behind Sasol Banyana Banyana and not forgetting the millions of South Africans fans who have invested their emotions with Banyana Banyana,” said Dr Ellis.
“We have a nice mixture of youth and experience and that was key in making our selection because while we have immediate goals, we still need to look beyond the tournament and not be found wanting.
“We are under no illusion that this competition will be tough, but we believe we have a balanced squad and are well prepared for what lies ahead of us.
She added: “The mission is clear, qualify for the World Cup and then we see how far we go. And that means the focus for now is the opening game against Tanzania as it will set the tone for the tournament.
