All Blacks close gap on Boks
The All Blacks have edged closer to the Springboks at the top of the World Rugby rankings after the third round of the Nations Championship.
Rassie Erasmus’ side remained No 1 following Saturday’s 43-0 win over Wales in Durban, but did not gain any ranking points because of the significant gap between the teams before kick-off.
However, No 2-ranked New Zealand collected the maximum available 1.24 rating points with a 40-21 victory over third-placed Ireland at Eden Park.
RENNIE: Boks a different beast
The All Blacks now trail the Boks by just 1.68 rating points heading into the next round of Test action.
South Africa face Argentina on 8 August in Buenos Aires before heading into the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.
Despite suffering another heavy defeat, Wales climbed above Italy into 11th place after the Azzurri were hammered 57-10 by Australia in Perth. The Wallabies earned 1.01 rating points from the nine-try victory, enough to remain eighth in Joe Schmidt’s final match as head coach before Les Kiss takes charge.

No 6-ranked Scotland’s 33-17 victory over Fiji at Murrayfield saw Gregor Townsend’s side gain 0.69 rating points, although the result did not alter either team’s position, with Fiji remaining ninth.
Fourth-placed France’s 42-15 win over Japan in Tokyo also failed to yield any ranking points because of the gulf between the two sides.
England, meanwhile, strengthened their hold on fifth place by beating Argentina 31-24 in Santiago del Estero. Steve Borthwick’s side picked up 0.93 rating points to close the gap on France and Ireland, while Argentina remain just ahead of Australia in seventh.

Yesterday, under the bright lights of the London Diamond League, Gift Leotlela crossed the finish line, stopped the clock at a sub-10 second time, and added another chapter to an increasingly poetic era of South African sprinting. For Leotlela, it was the eighth time in his career he had conquered the sport’s most iconic psychological barrier. But for the nation he represents, it was a declaration: South Africa no longer just produces sprinters; it breeds a culture of velocity.
In 2026, the Rainbow Nation has achieved what was once deemed unimaginable. For the first time in history, five different South African athletes have broken the 10-second barrier in a single calendar year(legal times only).
To understand the magnitude of this shift, one must look back exactly 12 years to where the spark became a flame.
The Day the Mindset Shifted: April 12, 2014
Every revolution has a genesis. For South African sprinting, it was a warm autumn day in Pretoria: April 12, 2014. Simon Magakwe lined up and blasted to a 9.98-second finish, becoming the first South African to ever breach the sub-10-second barrier.
Crucially, in that very same race, a raw, 20-year-old talent named Akani Simbine crossed the line in 10.02 seconds. He missed the magic number by a fraction, but it planted a seed of absolute certainty. The psychological ceiling had shattered.
The very next year, Simbine turned that certainty into reality, running 9.99 in Slovenia and backing it up eight days later with a 9.97 in South Korea. Around the same time, Henricho Bruintjies clocked a blistering 9.97 in Switzerland. The floodgates hadn’t just opened; they had been ripped off their hinges.
The Undisputed King and the Vanguard
If Magakwe was the pioneer, Akani Simbine is the monument.
Simbine has achieved a level of excellence that transcends South African borders, cementing a global legacy. By breaking the 10-second barrier again this year, he has extended his world-record streak to 12 consecutive calendar years of sub-10-second performances.
Out of the 74 times a South African has officially run under 10 seconds, an astonishing 51 belong to Simbine. He is the anchor of this movement, the standard-bearer whose relentless consistency taught a generation how to believe.
Behind him stands the resilient Gift Leotlela. At just 28 years old, Leotlela’s masterful performance in London yesterday marked his 8th career sub-10 clocking, proving that he remains in the prime of his career with years of lightning left in his spikes.

What makes the current 2026 season so profoundly historic is not just the speed, but the youth driving it. The modern South African sprinter steps onto the track devoid of intimidation, radiating a fierce pride and a mindset built entirely for the big stage.
Of the five athletes who have gone sub-10 this year, three are under the age of 23:
