Chiefs’ Da Cruz bemoans costly mistakes
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz says his side must stop making errors that lead to goals, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Chiefs howler
Chiefs took the lead through Lebohang Maboe’s well-taken strike, but Amakhosi’ keeper Brandon Petersen allowed Giovanni Philander’s corner to sneak past him at the near post as Rise and Shine grabbed a point.
The result means Amakhosi dropped to fourth in the table, a point behind AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates. Chiefs trail leaders Sundowns by eight points, though Da Cruz’ side do have two games in hand on Masandawana. newsbetting.cv
“It is very easy to analyse,” Da Cruz told SuperSport TV after the game.
“Before we didn’t make mistakes and didn’t give a chance to the opponent. Since Richards Bay, then Siwelele and now Polokwane, the opponent doesn’t create a chance but we make a big mistake and allow the opponent to score.”
The Chiefs head coach also called for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to be fast-tracked into the league.
“Against Richards Bay … there was no offside and then we could score (with VAR),” said Da Cruz.
“Against Siwelele the goal of (Wandile) Duba was a goal and today (against Polokwane City) there was a penalty. If we want to continue to develop the championship we need to set up VAR to help our referees.
“I don’t want to attack the referee but it’s very important to set up VAR to support and help the referee on the field.”
Chiefs felt Pule Mmodi was fouled inside the penalty area in the second half by City’s Moketsi Batlhabane, though it was unclear whether the initial contact was inside or outside the box.
Da Cruz also conceded that if Chiefs had made more of the opportunities that came their way, they could have killed off Rise and Shine and not left room for an equaliser.
‘You give the opponent the opportunity’
“We created chances and didn’t make the breakthrough, and when you don’t do that, you give the opponent the opportunity to come back,” he added.
Chiefs will now face Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Sunday at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, and could do with a morale-boosting three points to take into the international break.
‘It’s a dream come true,’ says Krappie after stellar performance against All Blacks
A blinding performance from Springbok scrumhalf Morné van den Berg against the All Blacks in Baltimore on Saturday has likely catapulted him to the front of the Boks’ No 9 queue, after years of being a fringe player.
Krappie, as he is affectionately known, has been part of the Bok setup since making his debut in 2024, and has travelled extensively with them over the years as part of the wider squad, but up until last month had only made six appearances.
But he has gone on to play four games over the past month, coming off the bench against Argentina and in two Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tests against the All Blacks, before earning his first ever start against the Boks’ biggest rivals in the USA at the weekend.
What followed was a superb all-action showing from the 28-year-old, as he played the full 80 minutes, provided crisp service and a competitive kicking game, while he sniped over for a try after pulling the ball out of a maul.
His efforts were rewarded with the man-of-the-match award, as he helped the Boks to a 43-28 win and 3-1 series triumph over their biggest foes, and backed up his brilliant cameo off the bench in the third Test in Soweto a week earlier.
‘Speechless’
“I’m so emotional. I just want to thank the Lord. It looked impossible that I would play in this series (due to picking up an injury late in the URC season), but his miracle hand touched me,” said Van den Berg in a television interview after the match .
“It’s been such a massive honour to play for this team, for this jersey, for our country, and for my family back home. I am so proud of the boys that we could pull it through. It was special (scoring a try). It’s always good to score tries, but a bit more special to score in this game.
“It’s a dream come true (playing against the All Blacks). You honestly dream of this when you’re a young boy playing (rugby) in the garden. Scoring tries in the corner of the garden. And then to be on this field in America, in Baltimore, in front of this amazing crowd. I am speechless.”
Decisions, decisions
Bok coach Rassie Erasmus will now have some tough decisions on his hands, as Van den Berg is arguably the form Bok scrumhalf now, and has proven he has what it takes to play in the big games. Could he now be ahead of Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach in the pecking order?
It will be interesting to see if he will be given a bit of a run in the starting jersey when the Boks continue their Nations Championship campaign during the November internationals.
Next up though, in two weekend’s time, is the one-off Test against Australia, but like the rest of the Bok squad who have been in action in recent weeks, Van den Berg might be rested for the trip Down Under.
Williams, if fit, Herschel Jantjies, Faf de Klerk and even Hashim Pead could come into the reckoning for that Test against the Wallabies.

Sudanese coach blames ‘lack of oxygen’ for Confederations Cup loss to Tusker
NAIROBI, Kenya, September 13, 2026 – The coach of Sudanese side Al Ahli Madani has blamed ‘lack of oxygen’ for Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Tusker in the second leg of their Caf Confederations Cup preliminary encounter at Nyayo Stadium.
Aliyu Zubairu says his players struggled to deal with the high altitude in the capital hence could not contain the brewers for 90 minutes.
“Kenya weather, sometimes you don’t have enough oxygen. When you are coming from where you have enough oxygen and you go to where there’s not enough oxygen, there’s definitely kind of a natural effect that will affect you. Some of the midfielders could not play very well because of this,” the Nigerian said.
The Sudanese giants came into the second leg, buoyed by their comeback in the first leg in Kigali, a week ago, when they hauled themselves from two goals down to claim a draw.
Despite their inferior quality on paper, they did well to match the brewers in every department for close to 70 minutes before capitulating to Chris Erambo’s volley from the edge of the box.
Zubairu admitted they paid the price for failing to capitalise on their own chances.
“Football is all about winning and losing. It’s either you win, you draw or you lose. Every country that comes to participate in the competition is a good team. We came, we played, and we did not use our own chances. Tusker got their own chances and made use of it,” he said.
As Julien Mette’s charges march on in the competition, Zubairu and Co will go back to the drawing board to begin their quest for another continental slot come next season.
