Canada versus the United States with gold on the line. Sunday’s Olympic final was always going to be a classic.
But even for one of the most highly anticipated hockey games in recent memory, the Americans’ 2-1 overtime victory exceeded expectations.
While Canada controlled the action for much of the game, outshooting the U.S. 42-28, Connor Hellebuyck delivered a performance befitting of the reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner.
After the countries traded goals in the opening two periods, the drama peaked in the third as the Canadians had multiple Grade-A chances but just couldn’t find a way to convert. The final 20 minutes also featured duelling high-sticking penalties, a stretch of 4-on-4 play and a number of high-pressure saves on both ends.
It all set up a 3-on-3 overtime, where Team USA’s Jack Hughes took a pass from Zach Werenski all alone in front of the Canadian net for the golden goal.
The win marked the first American Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since 1980 — 46 years to the day of their Miracle on Ice victory over the Soviet Union.
After the dramatic conclusion to an epic NHL return to the Winter Games, the sports world took to social media to react to the tournament finale.
