Inter Milan Head Coach Sets New Record For Points In A Debut Season In Charge Of The Nerazzurri

Cristian Chivu is making history in his first season in charge at Inter Milan, with the Romanian setting a new record for points accumulated in a debut campaign following Sunday’s 2-0 victory at Lecce.

The win moved Inter onto 64 points from 26 games, a tally no first-season Inter coach has ever reached at this stage, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Invernizzi previously held the record with 63 points, while Jose Mourinho managed 60 in his landmark debut season.

For context, the only manager to better Chivu’s return in Serie A as a debutant was Carcano at Juventus, and even he managed just one point more.

Liedholm’s debut at Milan yielded 63.

The victory at Lecce also extended Inter’s remarkable consistency, with Chivu’s side now registering 13 wins from their last 14 league games, including nine consecutive victories in away fixtures, during which they have gone 562 minutes without conceding.

Twenty-one league wins from 26 games is a staggering return for a coach in his first major managerial role.

Sunday’s win owed much to Chivu’s in-game management, with substitutes Mkhitaryan and Akanji both coming off the bench to score the goals that secured the points.

It was a masterclass in reading a tight game and further evidence that Inter have a very special manager on their hands.
