Roundup of Monroe County Region sports for events of Feb. 18

It’s back to Kalamazoo for New Boston Huron, Dundee and Bedford.

Those three teams were among the top eight teams in the state last season and returned to the state quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

All three won Regional championships.

Bedford avenged an earlier loss to reign over the Division 1 tournament at Dearborn, New Boston Huron cruised to the Division 2 title at Chelsea and a pair of shutout wins carried Dundee to the crown at Ida.

Division 1

DEARBORN – Bedford warmed up with a 46-33 victory over Southgate Anderson, then beat Westland John Glenn 42-21 in a battle of state-ranked teams.

John Glenn, which earned a win over Bedford earlier this season, came in ranked No. 7 in the state. Bedford was a spot behind.

The Mules take a 29-5 record to the state quarterfinals at Wings Events Center in Kalamazoo on Feb. 27.

Division 2

CHELSEA – Huron was in complete control with a 45-18 victory over Airport and a 48-20 triumph over Jackson Northwest in the finals.

But coach Logan Ritchie bristled at the idea that it was easy.

“Our road was not easy,” he said. “We’re banged up. Two of our best wrestlers are out.”

The Chiefs still had plenty of outstanding wrestlers on the mat.

Caleb Frazier (106), Max Banas (113) and Mason Slovik (175) all posted a pair of pins.

Daniel Gemmel (126) logged a pin and a technical fall.

Other double winners were Nathan Matsos (165), Jason Downs (138), Layne Johnson (215) and Finnegan Grube (190) also won twice.

Airport’s points came on a pin by Emmett Kruise (157), a technical fall by Kyle Link (132) and a major decision by Holden Otter (285) and an overtime win by Kenny Wingate (120).

Winning a District to reach the Regionals was a big step for Airport, which finished with a 21-19 record.

“It’s the first time in my coaching career,” said Airport coach Jon Morris. “But we don’t like to settle. Myself and the kids are not satisfied. But we only have two seniors.”

Division 3

IDA – Dundee looks ready to chase its ninth consecutive state championship with a pair of shutouts – 82-0 over Onsted and a maximum 84-0 over Ida.

“It worked out pretty well,” said Dundee coach Garrett Stevens, whose team improved to 22-3.

Stevens was disappointed that his opponents didn’t put their best wrestlers on the mat.

“Onsted didn’t wrestle any of their Regional qualifiers and Ida didn’t wrestler any of theirs except their heavyweight,” he said. “We were able to use 11 non-typical starters.”

Austin Miller (215 and 285) recorded two falls and Stone Redmon (215) won by technical fall and pin. They were the only Vikings to get on the mat twice.
